Home built before 1978?

Paint jobs involve minor sanding and loose paint removal. Get it tested for lead paint before starting, for safety sake. We love DIY – but love safe home’s more. Worth a check to get this right. Check out this EPA article and select a lead test kit.

Painting Brick?

You’ll want to cleanup loose mortar with a grinder and vacuum.

Breathe Easy – Get a Respirator

Low ventilation in your home or just want extra protection? Your paint kit includes an N95 mask – this is perfect for homes where you can’t open a window nearby or for those with sensitivities to airborne particles.

4-Step Interior Painting Process

Protect

Move furniture to the center or out of the room
Lay down drop cloths and plastic sheeting
Mask trim, windows, and fixtures with painter’s tape
Remove outlet covers and switch plates
Paint splatter and overspray will ruin floors and furnishings if not fully covered

Prep

Clean walls with mild detergent and dry thoroughly
Fill holes, cracks, and dents with spackle or putty
Sand patched areas and glossy surfaces for adhesion
Wipe away dust with a tack cloth
Skipping prep leads to peeling, bumps, and visible flaws under fresh paint

Paint

“Cut in” edges and corners with an angled brush
Roll large flats with a high-nap roller or spray for speed
Maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks
Apply even coats—watch for drips and runs
Uneven application or rushed strokes create streaks and roller lines

Finish

Remove painter’s tape at a 45° angle before paint fully dries
Inspect walls for missed spots and touch up as needed
Clean brushes, rollers, or sprayer according to manufacturer instructions
Reinstall outlet covers, switch plates, and hardware
Pulling tape too late can peel fresh paint right off the wall

How does delivery & pickup work?

Rentals run from 9:00 a.m. on the first day to 5:00 p.m. on the final day. We deliver between 7:00–9:00 a.m. and pick up between 5:00–7:00 p.m.

How does Toolio compare to other rental centers?

Traditional rentals charge per tool, often without guidance or supporting gear. We bundle everything, support you every step, and deliver to your door.

You’re not just renting tools – you’re getting a solution.

Will I need to buy paint and other materials?

You’ll need to purchase paint and primer – essentials and comprehensive bundles include everything else you need.

Included in your Toolio bundle: caulk, wall compound, brushes, rollers, and many others. You grab the items below — we’ve got your back on everything else.

Item Recommendations
Paint
  • Sheen: Start here. Flat hides imperfections but scuffs easily; eggshell is ideal for walls with a soft glow; semi-gloss suits trim and high-traffic zones; gloss is bold and durable but unforgiving on uneven surfaces.
  • Color & coats: Grab an extra quart for future touch-ups. If you’re painting over a similar shade, one coat might do it. For new colors—especially lighter over darker—plan for two coats.
  • Volume estimate: Calculate your wall area in square feet, divide by the coverage rate (typically ~350 sq ft per gallon), and double it if you’re doing two coats. That’s your real paint quantity—not just the marketing math.
Primer
  • Required: Yes. “Paint + Primer” is a marketing term—real primer boosts adhesion and prevents dreaded wall peels.
  • Product pick: For rooms with strong smells and rough old walls, KILZ 2 ALL PURPOSE Primer, Sealer, and Stain Blocker is great. One coat is enough.

Pro tip: Write down the room name and finish on leftover paint—saves you from mystery touch-ups later.
