Learn More About Choosing a Rip-Cut Saw

Let’s start with what a rip-cut is.
Easiest way: is the cut going to be cut more than 12″ long? If so, it’s probably a rip cut and you’ll need a rip saw.

Bottom Line Up Front

  • For most DIYers: A track saw is the best balance of safety, precision, and ease of use.
  • For advanced or repetitive work: A table saw is still the go-to (and safest with SawStop).
  • For pros only: A circular saw is low-cost and versatile, but requires skill and experience to use safely and accurately.

When it comes to making long, straight cuts, you’ve got three main options:

  • Track Saw – The modern favorite. Easy to set up, precise, and increasingly popular for sheet goods like plywood or MDF.
  • Table Saw – The traditional shop workhorse. Simple, versatile, and great for repetitive cuts, but requires careful safety practices.
  • Circular Saw – A low-cost, portable option. Powerful, but challenging to set up for accurate cuts and best left to highly experienced DIYers.

⚡ Why track saws are becoming more popular

Track saws are portable, precise, and versatile. They let you bring the saw to the material instead of wrestling large sheets onto a stationary table saw. For many DIYers, a track saw can replace a table saw for most sheet-cutting tasks.

That said, a track saw isn’t a perfect substitute. Table saws still excel at repetitive cuts, thicker stock, and providing a stable work surface.

✅ Advantages of a Track Saw

  • Portability – Lightweight and easy to transport; great for on-site work
  • Precision – Guide rails ensure straight, accurate cuts
  • Versatility – Handles plunge cuts, bevels, and long rips in sheet goods

⚠️ Limitations of a Track Saw

  • Cutting Depth – Usually maxes out around 2–3 inches (vs. ~4 inches on a table saw)
  • Repetitive Cuts – Slower for identical cuts compared to a table saw’s fence system
  • Stability – Lacks the built-in work surface of a table saw for heavy or awkward materials

🔨 Best Uses for Each Tool

Track Saw

  • Large sheet goods up to 8 ft (plywood, MDF, doors)
  • On-site or mobile projects where portability matters
  • Plunge cuts or interior cutouts

Table Saw

  • Repetitive cuts where consistency is key
  • Narrow boards (<12″)
  • Thick stock (>2.5″)
  • Heavy or awkward materials that need a stable work surface

Circular Saw

  • Budget-friendly, general-purpose cutting
  • Quick rough cuts when precision isn’t critical
  • Best for experienced DIYers who are confident with setup and control

🛡️ A Note on SawStop® Table Saws

At Toolio, we also offer SawStop® table saws, which use advanced safety technology that can stop the blade in milliseconds if it contacts skin. This dramatically reduces the risk of serious injury. If you’re considering a table saw, we recommend choosing a SawStop whenever possible—it provides the same cutting power with an added layer of protection.

4-Steps of Interior Carpentry

Plan & Measure

Every great build starts with precision. Mis-measurements are the #1 cause of frustration—measure twice, cut once.

Cut & Shape

From straight cuts to tricky angles, accuracy matters. The right tools make this step smoother and safer.

Assemble & Secure

Joining pieces is where projects come to life—but also where alignment and stability can test your patience.

Finish & Refine

No project is complete without sanding, paint, or stain. Finishing is what transforms raw carpentry into polished craftsmanship.
