Step 2 of 4: Pick Add-ons to Customize for Your Project
🛠 What Add-Ons Will I Need?
- 🧱 Is there old tile floor that needs to be removed? Select tile floor demo.
- 📏 Is the floor significantly out of level or otherwise not a smooth surface? Concrete in basements and foundations often are not flat or level. Add tools for self‑leveler application.
- 🪚 Most LVP floors are finished with wood trim and baseboard – pick an install kit with miter saw and other trim tools.
- 🚽 Is flooring going in the bathroom? You’ll need to remove the toilet and re‑install after the job.
- 🍴 Is flooring going in the kitchen? If there’s a dishwasher, you’ll need to remove and re-install after new flooring.

Step 3 of 4: Pick a Tile Leveling System
Leveling systems ensure flat tile installations without lippage. Provides benefits for tiles from 12×12″ and virtually required for large format tiles >18″. Learn more about why we recommend the Rubi Cyclone for a faster, more consistent tile install process. You’ll need re-useable base caps – and consumable bases.
Step 4 of 4: Shop for Materials
Materials Checklist (click to show)
| Item | Our Recommendations |
| Tile | – The most fun part of tile shopping! Pick wisely, consult many websites for inspiration. – Large-format tile has become very popular and has many aesthetic and functional benefits. – Tile sizes up to 24×24″ or planks of 6-8″ x 36″ are DIY-friendly. Ultra-large tiles (e.g. 24 x 48″+) require special techniques for handling, cutting, and installation and are not recommended for DIY. – Consider total area, tile size, layout pattern, and grout width when calculating quantity – Order 10% more than calculated to account for cuts and errors. – Consult a purchase guide to determine over-ordering for non-rectangular layouts (e.g. herringbone) |
| Grout | – Grout color makes a key impact on final design – consider carefully using visualization design tools and samples. – Consider total area, tile size, layout pattern, and grout width when calculating quantity. – Order 10% more than needed, rounding up for number of bags. – Use unsanded grout for 1/16″ grout lines – Use sanded grout for 1/8″+ grout lines. – Epoxy grout is challenging to work with yet has extreme durability. We recommend this for wet shower/bath and otherwise standard grout for other tile applications. – We recommend Mapei products. |
| Caulk | – Use 100% silicon caulk for all corners and change-of-planes. – Color-match or use white – Order (1) extra tube more than needed. |
| Thinset / Adhesive | – Choose the highest-quality thinset available. – Contractor-grade doesn’t mean better here; this grade is typically a low-cost formulation with minimal working time – which can be difficult for DIY. – Choose modified thinset in most cases for enhanced adhesion and strength benefits. – Choose unmodified for uncoupling membranes when specified by the manufacturer. Schluter Ditra requires unmodified for installation. – Never use adhesive/mastic or otherwise pre-mixed thinset for flooring or bathrooms. The ease-of-use is tempting but is highly prone to failure. Mastic is approved for use in kitchen backsplashes. – Use large format stone mortar for tiles with side length >16″. |
| Subfloor | – Tile requires an extremely rigid subfloor. Historically, installers would build a 3-4″ concrete mortar base to mitigate the effects of floor deflection. In modern building, mortar is replaced with concrete boards and/or uncoupling membranes. – Select either concrete board with sealed seams or a solid plywood subfloor and a uncoupling membrane. |
| Uncoupling membrane | – Uncoupling membranes provide a waterproof layer that allows tiles to be isolated from tiny subfloor movements. – We recommend Schluter Ditra. – Seams need to be sealed with a product such as Schluter Kerdi-Ban. |
| Tile leveling clips | – Tile leveling systems are critical to managing lippage, especially for large-format tile. – We rent re-useable Rubi Cyclone spinner heads and recommend the associated Rubi cyclone base clips. |
| Tile spacers | Tile leveling clips are typically 1/16″ or 1/8″ by default. Use extra tile spacers for larger grout sizes. |
| Wedge spacers | Used for change-of plane and making minor layout tweaks. |

🛠️ 4-Step Tile Floor Installation Guide
Understand the process, anticipate the challenges, and decide if you’re ready to DIY.
1. Planning
- Choose tile design, layout, and pattern
- Select grout color, caulk, and leveling system
- Order all materials in advance
- ✅ The fun part—you handle the creative, we’ll the tools!
2. Prep
- Demo old flooring (if needed)
- Physically demanding—bring a friend!
- Critical step: flatten the subfloor
- Remove all debris, screws, and high spots
- Setup the layout – a dry-fit makes sure you’ll catch issues like tiny sliver tiles or unbalanced grout lines
- ⚠️ A single pebble or ⅛” hump can ruin tile setting and a bad layout will be visible for decades
3. Set
- Mix thinset with power mixer for 1-hour worth of tile setting
- Cut tiles using a wet saw and polish cut edges. An abrasive saw is much safer than traditional wood-cutting saws with sharp teeth.
- Set and level tiles while watching the clock before thinset dries
- ⚠️ Tedious but repeatable with good prep
4. Finish
- Apply grout between tiles
- Caulk seams and edges cleanly
- Use finishing tools to reduce mess
- ⚠️ Only aesthetics at this point, but can be tricky! Finishing tools and tips on applying grout / caulking helps get clean lines while avoiding sticky hands
Tile install is physically demanding—you’ll be on your knees for hours, lifting heavy tiles and racing to spread thinset before it skins over—and even with meticulous prep (flattening high spots, cleaning thoroughly), unexpected hiccups can arise and thinset can get downright messy. But push through, and you could tile a kitchen, large bathroom, or 2–3 bedrooms in just two weekends, saving $4,000–$6,000+ over hiring a contractor. The best part is, we’ve touched the hot stove before you—and have designed a system that helps avoid issues and enjoy the best project experience possible!
Rentals run from 9:00 a.m. on the first day to 5:00 p.m. on the final day. We deliver between 7:00–9:00 a.m. and pick up between 5:00–7:00 p.m. Occasionally, delivery may happen the night before and pickup the morning after your rental ends — you’re never charged for extra time outside the window.
Toolio isn’t just about price—it’s about outcomes. Pricing isn’t apples-to-apples, so we encourage you not to judge on the most obvious sticker prices. Our approach is full solutions: comprehensive packages not because of more tools, but because the tools we include lead to better project results.
We work to avoid surprises that drive up your long‑term cost. Delivery and pickup are included, our process is thoughtful from Day 1 to Done, and we back you with success guaranteed. Customers come to us for results—not just tools.
We know price matters and we aim to be competitive. We generally don’t directly price match, because what we offer you can’t find anywhere else.
For example, a 200 sq ft tile project over 3 days:
- Traditional rental centers: Tile saw around $75/day ($225), plus mortar mixer, shop‑vac, grinder, spacers, hand tools, and safety gear—often purchased separately. Total: $1250+ for gear that may sit unused until your next tile job.
- Toolio: Pro‑grade tools bundled and delivered, curated accessories, and step‑by‑step guidance. Total: $610 for 3 days, delivery & pickup included.
You’re not just renting tools—you’re renting a solution. With fewer trips to the store, fewer surprises, and better results, Toolio helps you spend smarter across the entire project.
